Captain Over Them

Captain Over Them by Kirk Hunt

David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. So when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.

1 Samuel 22:1-2 NKJV

Unjustly accused, and a death warrant issued in his name, David hid in the cave of Adullam. First, his extended family joined him. Then the losers of Israel came. David became a captain or leader to those shunned and despised by everyone else.

With the elite forces of King Saul looking for him, David gained responsibility for the lowest people in Israel. Some would call those same folk liabilities. Deadbeats, troublemakers, and whiners from across Israel came to David for help and support. Instead of a handout, David gave them courage, valor, skill, and expertise.

Perhaps you think your Adullam experience is the end of you. God is instead setting you up for future success. Those sniveling losers need to be transformed into elite champions. And their captain is a king (or queen) in training.

You will have to stay the course. You will train, educate, encourage and discipline men and women everyone else jettisoned. They do not look like much now, but they will be champions after you become God’s captain over them.

Think: God is setting you up as a future king (or queen) by making you a captain now.

Pray: “Lord, help me to minister Your way, in Your Name, here and now.”

Transformed

Transformed By Kirk Hunt

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

 Romans 12:2 NKJV

When I saw the photo, the theme from The Twilight Zone started playing. I assume only I could hear the tune. I recognized my Gospel brother easily. Frankly, I did not want to recognize the woman, now transformed, standing next to him.

The pre-transformation woman in the photo seemed ill-tempered and unloving. I did not want to believe she was ever my loving and gracious Gospel sister. The evidence insisted on staring at me from the living room shelf.

Transformation happens when the nature of a person (or thing) is completely changed. Wood can be transformed into heat. Wind can be transformed into electricity. Sinners can be transformed into saints.

You have a choice. You can remain as you are, or you can be transformed. God’s power stands ready to make something wonderful and saintly of you.

I have always known her as a lovely and loving woman of God. That snapshot tells me she was not always the angel I know. Her choice to embrace God’s plan for her life changed everything.

God loves you just as you are. Still, He loves you too much to leave you as you are. Choose Him and be transformed.

Think:             I can be transformed by God’s power, if I choose Him.

Pray:               “Lord, transform me, Your way.”

React to Respond to React

“React to Respond to React” by Kirk Hunt

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Romans 12:2 KJV

Most Christians understand that they should not react like the world. Normally, we say we should respond the way Christ would. I’m no longer convinced this goes far enough.

Martial artists, law enforcement and medical professionals are all trained to react. A response may be too slow. So they laboriously train to react the right way.

Their training is often old-school drills and repetition. Sooner or later, their minds and bodies ingrain the lessons. They stop having to think about what to do, and their minds and bodies simply do what must be done.

Christians can learn how to react, just as Christ would. Study and meditate on Scripture until your instinctual reaction is one of grace and love. As we grow closer to Christ, we can trust our thoughtless reactions to be from His heart.

You know the drill. Bible study. Prayer. Fasting. Over time, your godless reactions will change into saintly responses, but finally end in Christ-like reactions. You too can learn to react like Christ.

Think: I must move from a worldly response, to a Christ-like reaction.

Pray: “Lord, help me to react like You, every day, in every way.”

Report To The Battlefield

“Report To The Battlefield” by Kirk Hunt

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Romans 12:2 KJV

Just in case you didn’t notice, there’s a war for your soul going on. The enemy of your soul launches frequent attacks. Perhaps daily. It’s important that you report to the battle site and join in the fight.

The conflict is both close and far. The territory is simultaneously familiar and foreign. It is in the human mind where we fight to preserve our souls. It is in the twists and turns of our own personalities that the enemy seeks to defeat us.

The Apostle Paul gives us a simple command for the enemy’s defeat. Renew your mind. Transform yourself in God’s image and win the day.

Easily said. Not as easily done. Still, with God, nothing is impossible. “Let go and let God,” and victory is certain.

It starts with one step, report to the battle field. Your commander, the King of Kings is waiting to instruct and guide you. Are you ready for victory?

Think : The mind is the battlefield, but Christ is the General of generals.

Pray: “Lord, transform me in Your will and image. After that, the battle is won.”
