Be Still And Know

Be Still And Know by Kirk Hunt

Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!

Psalm 46:10 NKJV

Be still and know that God is God. A simple command. You would think I could obey it more easily.

Too often, I look at all the injustices that seem unchecked. I despair that all of the villains and scoundrels are not just getting away with it, but are prospering. I am looking at the wrong things.

God is God. He is holy. He is just. Thankfully, he does not immediately judge me for every infraction.

In the end, He will be exalted. All of the nations and jurisdictions will know that He is in charge. In the meantime, my job is to quietly know.

He is God. No matter what the world does, that fact will not change. When I forget He is my source, I am suddenly without consolation or assurance.  When I stop and contemplate God, I am better for the time spent.

Too often, I rush about my day and ignore Him. I am too frequently absorbed by my day and tasks, instead of His Word and presence. His peace and assurance will grow only in His presence. I have to stop and be still and let His presence provide all the answers.

Think: Am I quietly focused on God, or noisily rushing around?

Pray: “Father-God, help me to live quietly focused on You alone.

Hear His Voice

Hear His Voice By Kirk Hunt

and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

1 Kings 19:11-12 NKJV

Even the best of us sometimes look for the wrong thing.  We think God speaking must be in some huge, big thing.  Our expectations lead us to miss His voice.

If you survey Scripture, God often speaks softly.  He wants to talk with you.  Not as a frowning judge.  He wants a quiet personal chat, face-to-face (Shekinah) with a friend.

Elijah watched as wind, then earthquake, and finally fire battered the mountain.  While the storms were attention-getting, they were not God’s voice to His prophet.  A gentle whisper announced God’s presence.  Elijah left the cave and stepped into the powerful presence of God.

There was a lot going on around Elijah.  God wanted His prophet to appoint kings and settle nations.  But before Elijah went out, God wanted to just sit and talk.  So God whispered and Elijah answered.

Does God speak through cryptic dreams or mysterious visions?  Sure.  Scripture says so.  Does He whisper in quiet stillness?  Scripture says yes, absolutely.

Make time in your life to listen.  Let the violent winds, blow past.  Steady yourself while the earth quakes.  Let the raging fires sweep through.  Then go out, into His presence, when you hear His whisper.

He wants to speak with you.  Quietly.  Gently.  Personally.  Respond to His whispering voice.

Think:            God’s voice is very often heard as a quiet whisper.

Pray:              “Lord, help me to hear Your Voice and spend time in your presence.”

Time With Him

Read

Time With Him by Kirk Hunt

And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

Mark 6:31 KJV

Busy schedules can be a sinister, cruel trap.  Yes, the needs are great.  Surely, the opportunities are rich.  Still, below the surface of constant effort, lay the rocks of exhaustion and weariness.

Have you been busy in the Gospel fields?   Do you labor in the marketplace?  Then you are a good servant.

Still, the Master calls you.  He beckons from a quiet place where He can have you to Himself.  There is more to Christianity than labor and striving.

Do not go too many hours without spending time with Him.  Make sure He is in your meeting schedules.  Let His peace and joy flood through your soul on a regular basis.

Are you really His?  When was the last time you sat at His feet?  How long has it been since His presence blanketed your soul?

There will be times and days when you run non-stop.  It becomes all the more important to linger at a quiet place, resting with the Master.  The human mind and heart are not built for constant striving.  The mortal soul is not designed to be away from Him for long.

The lions and giants in your life will wait another few minutes.  Spend some money on a quiet chat with a loving Savior.  It will be a good investment.

Think:            No achievement should interfere with your time alone with Jesus.

Pray:              “Lord, help me to be disciplined about spending time with You.”

Quiet Talk

Read

“Quiet Talk” by Kirk Hunt

And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

1 Kings 19: 12 – 13 KJV

Please read 1 Kings 19:11 – 18

Elijah sat in the cave while waves of catastrophe rolled over the mountain. Winds, lashed and shattered the stone of the mountain. An earthquake further broke the shredded rock. Finally, a wildfire scrubbed the remaining landscape.

Elijah, familiar with the things of God, knew noise when he heard it. The fury, heat and shaking were events, but not notable. God’s whisper brought the prophet to his feet. In reverence, Elijah covered his face and walked from darkness to the shekinah glory-cloud.

God is speaking today. Not with clamor and cacophony, but in calm and tranquility. You can hear Him. Hold still a few minutes. Turn everything off for a while.

When were you last in silence and stillness? Quiet, not just physically but mentally, allows you to hear His Voice. He has a message for you.

Think: I can hear God best in quietness.

Pray: “Lord, help me to listen, in stillness and quiet, to Your Voice.”

Leadership Prayer

Read

“Leadership Prayer” by Kirk Hunt

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

2 Timothy 2:1—2 KJV

Christians are called to pray for leadership. Are they in civil authority over you? Then you are to pray for them.

Paul would have been directing Christian men and women to pray for the Roman Caesar. Would you follow the Biblical commandment to pray for Nero, the great Roman persecutor of Christians? Just as you should pray for your local, state (province) or national leaders.

The commandment is to pray for them so that we can lead a “quiet and peaceable” life, here in the real world. They do not have to be believers. You do not have to be in agreement with their policy or decisions. It is God’s job to sort that part out.

There seems to be chaos and uncertainty through much of the world, these days. Do you really believe that regular men and women have the answers for so many difficult issues? We need unearthly intelligence and thinking to save our world.

As always, God is the answer. Pray that those who hold authority in the world get their orders from God. Only he has the solution that let us lead quiet and peaceable lives.

Think: As a Christian, I am called to pray for my leadership.

Pray: “Lord, help me to build your Kingdom, through prayer.”
