I Am Not Lunch

I Am Not Lunch By Kirk Hunt

Moreover David said, “The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”

And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

1 Samuel 17:37 NKJV

His fangs gleam. He looks me in the eye and licks his chops. The hellhound is happy to see me. He thinks I am lunch.

David’s hellhound came in the form of a 9 foot 9 inch tall fighting man named Goliath. King Saul lacked the strength, or faith, to face the Philistine. David’s faith, and experience with God, told him he would not be lunch. It did not matter how much Goliath shouted out a menu (1 Samuel 17:44).

Faith is not the absence of doubt. Nor does it ignore the facts and data. Instead, faith is belief greater than doubt or the expected outcome.

God’s people are never victims. We face our trials and tribulations with faith in God. We trust that His solution will see us through. Through Him we are not on the menu for anyone, or anything.

David won against Goliath through his faith in God. Turn and face the hellhound(s) in your life. God is with you. Though faith in His power, you will not be lunch. God’s champions are always victors and never victims.

Think:            No matter what I face, I choose to face it through faith in God.

Pray:               “Lord, help me to trust in Your strength.”

Abba, Father

Read

Abba, Father By Kirk Hunt

And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

Galatians 4:6 NKJV

During my visit to Israel, the Tour Leader and his son suddenly started discussing money. The son, twenty-something years old, wanted extra money (no surprise) for an event. The discussion started in English, but switched to Hebrew, as son and Father “negotiated.”

The switch in language was effective, until we heard that tone. Son was using that imploring, almost-whining voice that every father in the group (if not the planet) knew too well. On top of the tone, all but one of us, recognized the word, “Abba.”

We laughed. We started to talk about taking up a collection. No real father is completely cold to the sound of that plea and cry from a son (or daughter). No matter what the child deserves, a father’s heart wants to give him (or her) more.

The son did not hesitate to implore his Dad. Because he knew his Dad loved him. Even if it mean compensation or sacrifice later, Son, understood his Dad would only do good things for him.

Your heavenly Father, Abba-God, Daddy-God, loves you. Your heavenly Father’s heart wants to give you more, because He loves you. He loves you more purely, truly and completely than any flesh-and-blood mortal can love anyone.

You are sons and daughters of the most high, God. Let your heart cry out to Him, no matter what the subject. I guarantee you that His heart hears you as a only a Father can.

Think:             Abba-God, Daddy-God loves me.

Pray:               “Lord, help me to rely on and trust Your love.”

Called To Follow

Read
Called To Follow By Kirk Hunt

After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, “Follow Me.”

 Luke 5:27 NKJV

Levi bar-Alpheus, better known as Matthew, was doing his job. Matthew’s employment effectively made him a collaborator with the Romans. Right in the middle of a regular workday, Jesus called Matthew.

There were no long speeches or grand statements. Jesus did not perform a miracle or otherwise demonstrate His power. Jesus commanded. Matthew responded.

Calling is not some mysterious, mystical event. It is a summons to follow Jesus Christ. Do not try to make it more complicated than that.

He speaks His calling in a clear voice. Still, the clatter and clank of the workday may compete. You will have to listen carefully.

Calling is straight-forward. Jesus calls us to leave our lives as we know them, and follow Him. Your calling will require change. It may require sacrifice.

All of the Apostles left their homes and livelihoods. They fanned out through the world, spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They left, and went, in answer to their call.

Matthew was working a regular shift. Angels did not suddenly appear and blow trumpets. Still, his calling came, spoken by Jesus Himself.

Listen carefully. Jesus is closer than you think. His calling is clearer than you realize.

Think:             Jesus calls me. What is my response?

Pray:               “Lord, help me answer Your call, fully and completely.”

Transformed

Transformed By Kirk Hunt

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

 Romans 12:2 NKJV

When I saw the photo, the theme from The Twilight Zone started playing. I assume only I could hear the tune. I recognized my Gospel brother easily. Frankly, I did not want to recognize the woman, now transformed, standing next to him.

The pre-transformation woman in the photo seemed ill-tempered and unloving. I did not want to believe she was ever my loving and gracious Gospel sister. The evidence insisted on staring at me from the living room shelf.

Transformation happens when the nature of a person (or thing) is completely changed. Wood can be transformed into heat. Wind can be transformed into electricity. Sinners can be transformed into saints.

You have a choice. You can remain as you are, or you can be transformed. God’s power stands ready to make something wonderful and saintly of you.

I have always known her as a lovely and loving woman of God. That snapshot tells me she was not always the angel I know. Her choice to embrace God’s plan for her life changed everything.

God loves you just as you are. Still, He loves you too much to leave you as you are. Choose Him and be transformed.

Think:             I can be transformed by God’s power, if I choose Him.

Pray:               “Lord, transform me, Your way.”
